The human cost of bad compliance experience

I love the work. I don't love sending the same DBS to three different agencies in the same month.

Compliance experience is workforce experience. The difference between staying in the sector and leaving it is often a single bad onboarding.

Compliance as workforce experience

n hospitality, an experienced server can show up at a new restaurant and start work the same day. In regulated work, the same experienced professional can wait two to three weeks before their first shift — even when they have just left a similar role and their evidence is fresh.

For an adult with bills to pay, that gap is the difference between accepting and not accepting a role. We have lost good people from regulated sectors because the onboarding experience felt like an interrogation.

Trust is a two-way audit

Compliance has historically been framed as the employer auditing the worker. The reality is that workers are also auditing the employer — through the experience of being onboarded.

A worker who has to re-submit the same DBS to four agencies in a year learns something about how seriously the sector takes their time. So does the trust whose locum nurses spend the first hour of a shift hunting for a manager to verify their identity.

What good feels like

A well-designed compliance experience feels like a clinical handover. It is short. It is structured. It assumes you are competent. It tells you what was already verified and what was not. It explains what the next step is.

When workers describe the moments that made them stay in a sector — and we have asked many — the compliance experience comes up far more than people in head office expect.
